Geraki holds a special place within the weaving communities of Greece. Archaeological finds, material evidence, and written sources demonstrate that women of Geraki have been engaged in weaving from the Bronze Age through the Middle Ages and into the modern era. The continuity of weaving practices over the centuries sets this village apart from all others.
The art of weaving in Geraki has been recognized through national and international awards and also through its inscription in the Greek National Intangible Cultural Heritage Index in 2019. This site assembles kilims, bed covers, and tagaria woven in Geraki from 1686 through the present day and records the stories of Geraki weavers through a mapping project and interviews.
